The Church of the Ascension lays nestled amongst mature trees on Dignan Street in Pt Chevalier. It is a wooden building, built 1918 of native timbers, and like many churches it is laid out in the form of the cross. The exposed interior timber is Rimu which, in 1956, the congregation set to and applied a clear finish to maintain its natural look. The bell tower with its white painted cross was for many years the highest point of the surrounding district and still fulfils its function each Sunday with the ringing of the bell.

The Rattray Memorial Hall was built in the church grounds early in the 1940s. It was used by the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides and the Church Indoor Bowls Group as well as being the home of the Sunday School. In the late 1950s the stage, which had been used for Sunday School and Parish Concerts, was changed into a the parish lounge and the Hall extended into the vicarage garden for a new stage area. Now, fitted out with wintertime heating the Hall can be rented to the public for appropriate events.

If you are interested in using the hall please contact the Church of the Ascension – tel (09) 846 5102
